A day after the Philadelphia 76ers got swept by the Boston Celtics they have decided to release Head Coach Brett Brown after 7 seasons. Almost everyone in the NBA saw this move coming after the pitiful performance from the 76ers this past series. Yesterday after the 110-106 loss, Brett Brown was asked if he felt he had ever reached his peak as the coach with the 76ers. His response was simple,"No". He had no words because there was nothing really was nothing to say. His career record with the 76ers was 221 wins to 344 losses, far from perfect. I understand in the beginning he was coaching the tanking "Trust the Process" team. But he simply did not do well enough with the loaded teams he was handed with the past 3 seasons. Personally I think it is the right time for Brett Brown to depart. In fact it probably was one year too late.
The only bright spot I saw in the entire series was the amazing performances from Joel Embiid night after night. He averaged 30 points and 12 rebounds for the entirety of the series. He worked the post relentlessly and got the the foul line a lot. As a Philly fan, I respect his heart and all the effort that he played with in the series. I only wish more of the team did the same.
With as much talent the 76ers had this season, they should have been able to at least compete with the Celtics. And yes, even with Superstar Point Forward Ben Simmons out of the line up, it would have been nice to steal a game or two. When asked if the team played to its potential Brett Brown said "You got to take the team and you have to try and maximize it. I did not do that". I do appreciate him taking the fall for the depressing bubble season, and I wish him all the best wherever he goes next. General Manager and former 76er Elton Brand seems to be staying on for one more season. When asked about the teams future, 76ers GM Brand said "I'm not looking to trade Ben or Joel, I'm looking to compliment them better." Tye Lue as of right now is the current favorite for the open Head Coaching position. He's a coach that has experience dealing with multiple big personalities on one squad. Also look for some big roster moves that will definitely retool the roster. Lack of depth, experience and three point shooting was a major issue for the team, and I suspect they will make the necessary moves to fix those problems. I think the 76ers will fully commit to building a team that can support their franchise players Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Al Horford and Tobias Harris could be the unlucky ones who find themselves on the trading block this summer.
